Councillor and Mrs SA finalist donate hygiene packs

Children in Wattville showed off their teeth, revealing big smiles, on May 6, after meeting Mrs SA’s finalist Simone Schroeter and receiving hygiene packs.

Clr Mary Goby and Schroeter partnered to hand out 30 hygiene packs to the Sinethemba Day Care children, who are aged from babies to six years old.

Goby thought of handing out hygiene packs after visiting an informal settlement near the N12, in February. She was disheartened to see children brushing their teeth with their fingers.

“Children are the future, so we need to give back to them,” she said.

The women first visited the Zamokuhle Care Centre, just to spend time with the 66 children in the school.

“These children come from poverty-stricken backgrounds,” said one of the teachers, Sibongile Dladla.

“They are aged from two to five and most of them live with their grannies.”

The women then visited Sinethemba Day Care, which has been operational for 22 years.

“My mother, Rhoda Malinga, started this centre and, when she died four years ago, I took over,” said Fikile Malinga.

“We have three teachers here, and 35 children.”

The children were excited to receive hygiene packs which comprised a face towel, a toothbrush, toothpaste and soap.
