Man escapes from Benoni SAPS, rearrested

A man who escaped from the Benoni SAPS cells was arrested a day later, May 8.

On May 7, a 32-year-old suspect was arrested for shoplifting in Benoni.

EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago said police heard a “shrilling” noise from the cells at around midnight.

“On carrying out an inspection, to establish the reason for the screaming, a police officer was overpowered by two suspects, and the ”screaming suspect” managed to escape with keys and the policeman’s cellphone,” said Kgasago.

He added that it emerged that the person screamed to feign illness.

“The EMPD, together with the police, rearrested the suspect after receiving information from a source,” said Kgasago.

The man was nabbed in a taxi travelling on Dube Street, Wattville.

It is unclear how he escaped from the cell.

The man was charged with shoplifting and escaping from police custody, and is expected to appear at the Benoni Magistrates Court, on May 9.
