Bunny Park employee counters assault charge

A Bunny Park employee has opened a counter-case of common assault against the two volunteers who said, on Tuesday (May 3), that they were assaulted by the woman.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Const Zunickha Essakjee said the woman felt she was assaulted by the volunteers.

Essakjee added that the woman also opened a case of crimen injuria, which constitutes an infringement of the complainant’s rights.

Tania Forrest-Smith (Bunny Park Animals 911 Group) and Smaragda Louw (Ban Animal Trading chairperson) entered the park’s notorious “death pit” on Tuesday, after which the woman approached them.

According to them, she started pushing them around when Louw tried to take a picture of her.

Essakjee said Brig Johan Jacobs, the Benoni Police Station commander, would meet with the park’s management, the Ekurhuleni Metro, the volunteer groups involved and the Benoni SPCA next week.

“The meeting will be arranged to discuss the issues around the park and find a solution to the situation,” Essakjee said.

The Bunny Park employee did not want to comment at the time of publication.
