Meet the judge of this worthy prize

The Benoni City Times Mother’s Day Cake Bake Competition is upon us, so if you have not started prepping, you should.

One of the many prizes up for grabs is valued at R7 500 and is sponsored by Berry Legg, who is a judge.

Legg, who is the brand owner of Miz Gooz Berry, is looking for the most promising baker to carry off this reward.

So what qualifies Berry Legg, you may wonder?

Well, her passion for baking has been flowing through her veins for 18 years.

“It is a blessing to be able to do what I love,” she said.

“When you are given a talent by God, there is a responsibility to be a good steward thereof.”

Shortly after starting her business in 1997, she realised that there was a need for exclusive, specialised, hand-made confections and foods on the East Rand.

Legg believes the key to keeping her business growing lies in the top quality products, an attitude of excellence in customer service, and good relationships with clients.

So, be sure to wear your smile on the day.

Her growing business has also seen the success of a second Miz Gooz Berry.

“Xanthe Weissnar, who owns the Gauteng branch, worked for me while studying a bachelor of consumer science in food and hospitality management,” Legg said.

Weissnar, who will be accompanying Legg to the competition, will decide which baker is the most deserving of the R7 500 prize.

Contestants who may need tips on what to do to win the hearts of both women should do the following:

• Develop recipes that cater for those who have special dietary requirements.

• Be teachable.

“The prize is a trip to and from Kaapsche Hoop, on the Lowveld Link or Lime Shuttle,” Legg said.

The winner will depart from O R Tambo International Airport to Miz Gooz Berry and enjoy a two-night stay, including breakfast, lunch and dinner in The Nest Bed, and breakfast for one person, with a one-day consultancy with Miz Gooz Berry.

This prize cannot be exchanged for cash.

The cake bake competition will be held on May 5, at the Cherrylane Gourmet Café, on the corner of 14th Avenue and Fifth Street.

The categories are:

• Professional (anyone who makes an income from baking).

• Fun Bake (those who bake for enjoyment).

• Tarts – savoury and sweet.

• Cupcakes (a minimum of 12 cupcakes).

• Tartlets (sweet and savoury – a minimum of 12 tartlets).

Entrants must arrive at Cherrylane Gourmet Café at 7.30am, on May 5.

All items entered will be donated to the elderly or people in need.
