Wedding cake inspired her passion for baking

“My passion for cakes began with my own wedding cake,” said the next Benoni City Times Mother’s Day Cake Bake Competition judge, Moira Wall.

She did not bake her own cake, she just drew inspiration from it.

“The lady who made my cake decorated it with the most beautiful realistic orchids,” she said.

“This is where my fascination with cakes and baking developed.”

Not only did she start baking birthday and wedding cakes for friends and family, she also joined the South African Cake Decorators Guild (SACDG) in the late 1990s.

Making full use of this privilege, she attended every available class to learn about baking from qualified teachers who had a vast array of skills.

Wall is also not a new face to the City Times as she has been a judge for the previous Benoni City Times Mother’s Day Cake Bake Competition.

“I also attended a Basic Practical and Teachers Examination in 2002 with SACDG which led to me also sharing my knowledge,” she said.

Here’s what Walls looks for in a cake:

• First Impression

• Balance

• Texture

• Flavour

“The more skills used on a cake impact positively on the result,” she concluded.
