Municipal workers help arrest suspect

Municipal employees helped catch one of four attempted house robbery suspects, by pointing him out, hiding in the long grass of a field.

Three suspects were arrested by CPF members, who chased them into a field near the corner of Main Reef and New Modder roads, after an attempted house robbery in Snipe Street, Mackenzie Park.

The incident happened at around 11am today (April 14).

“There were two guys running into the field, another was in a getaway car,” said one of the four employees, all of whom wished to remain anonymous.

“We pointed out the third guy, who was hiding in the long grass, to the CPF.”

When asked whether they were afraid of the suspects, one of the witnesses explained how her colleague tried to interrogate a suspect and added: “She used to be a security guard, she’s very brave.”

Brig Poobalan Subbiah, acting Ekurhuleni SAPS Central Cluster commander, said the three arrested suspects will be charged with attempted house robbery, possession of housebreaking implements and possession of drugs.

“The response from the community and the CPF deserves credit, without them, we would not have caught the suspects,” he said.

One suspect evaded arrest by escaping through the field.

Subbiah had a photo taken with one of the witnesses, congratulating and thanking her for the support.
