State appeal to Liebenberg acquittal fails

An appeal to the acquittal of Retief Liebenberg was dismissed on Monday (April 11).

Liebenberg, who was accused of murder after shooting 19-year-old Dewald “Poena” Visser and his father Dewald Visser Snr (46) at his Ebotse residence, was found not guilty on November 19, 2015.

The state prosecution lodged an appeal to the judgment on February 4, but was unsuccessful when judge Mohamed Ismail rejected the application.

Liebenberg was arrested on October 31, 2013, at his Ebotse residence on the day of the shooting.

He has been emotionally distraught by the incident and more than two years of court cases.

“It’s been emotionally difficult for us,” said Liebenberg.

“It’s something we’re all still going through and it will never be easy.

“Many of my family and friends attended some of the hearings, I truly appreciate it, as well as my legal team for all their hard work.”

The Vissers did not wish to comment.
