Addresses cause friction for voters

Social media has been abuzz with complaints about missing or wrong addresses on the voters' roll of the IEC.

Glynis Millett-Clay, who has lived at the same address in Farrarmere for the past 37 years, said she and her husband were told their address was not on the voters’ roll.

“We sent our ID numbers via SMS to check whether we were registered and we were,” said Millett-Clay.

“Shortly thereafter, we got a message saying the IEC doesn’t have our address; we went to the voting station this weekend (April 9 and 10) and had to fill in forms, because they didn’t have our address.”

According to Clr Imtiaz Loonat (Ward 29), people’s addresses are not a pre-requisite to vote at this stage.

“You have to vote in the area you stay in, but people are not legislated to provide proof of address to register,” she said.

“The registration went well for the rest, I was satisfied with it.”

When asked by when residents would have to sort out the address issue in order to vote in August, Loonat said: “The IEC and courts will have to sort that out, we (ANC) don’t get involved there.”

The City Times asked on Facebook whether any Benonians had issues with registration at the voting stations this weekend.

“I stay in Benoni Agricultural Holdings and I went to Petit High School yesterday (April 10) to double check all my details and they have me living in Germiston,” said Alicia Greenway.

“I have never lived there, I moved up to Johannesburg from Durban and have been at the same address all along, for 10 years; I’m very disappointed.”

Teboho Carlotti Sikhondo said: “I didn’t have any problems during my registration, everything was perfect. I can’t wait to vote in August, may the best team win.”

The IEC was approached for comment, but none had been received at the time of publication.

The municipal elections will be held on August 3.

Residents who have not registered can still do so at the local IEC offices.
