More than a weatherman

Did you know that Clive Webber, known as the Benoni weatherman, actually specialises in Earth science?

So what does that mean? Well, he is not just a weatherman.

He has a degree in astronomy (study of celestial objects), climatology and geology (solid and liquid matters of the Earth).

The City Times interviewed Webber on Tuesday (April 5), to find out more about his life and work.

BCT: What makes you a Benonian?

CW: I was born in Benoni, attended Benoni Junior, Tom Newby and Benoni High schools.

And I feel no urge to move out of Benoni, because this is my home town.

I was also around during the era when Benoni was considered the Jewel of the East Rand.

BCT: Apart from recording our weather, and your degrees, tell us more about your achievements?

CW: I am an Honorary Ranger for the South African National Parks.

I established the Junior Honorary Rangers on the East Rand around 2005 and taught at Benoni High School and at the Johannesburg College of Education, training teachers.

I played social and league tennis at the Northmead and Benoni tennis clubs and completed the Cape Argus Cycle Tour on 16 occasions.

I hold talks about astronomy and my other degrees to teach people about Earth.

BCT: Where do you hold these talks?

CW: I do talks on astronomy in Rynpark every two months.

BCT: You are indeed a busy man, what do you do in your personal time?

CW: My wife, Margaret, died last year and I have two sons. My eldest son, Steven Webber, cycled the Cape Argus Cycle Tour with me this year.

My youngest son, Peter Webber, lives in Canada.

I enjoy horse riding, I fellowship at Northfield Methodist Church and run courses at SA National Parks on Earth science.

BCT: For how long have you held these courses?

CW: For 20 years; it is a passion of mine.

I have conducted courses in seven or eight SAN Parks.

BCT: Did you always have a love for Earth science?

CW: I enjoyed the subject of geography in school; I then studied at the University of the Witwatersrand, where I took the subject of geology, mainly because it complimented geography, and I enjoyed it.

BCT: You are 71 years old and still so enthusiastic about life, what are your plans for the future?

CW: I will continue giving talks on Earth science and I will keep cycling to keep myself fit.
