Love and unity for Brussels

A Benonian documented scenes from the recent Brussels attacks.

“It was overwhelming to see how people showed love, unity and hope,” said Rynfield resident Baveesha Naran.

The Rynfield woman found herself in Brussels at the time of the explosions on March 22.

She recalls the aftermath of the explosions, as citizens gathered in the city streets to show support for the victims who had suffered the terrorist attacks at the Brussels Airport and subway.

According to Naran, there was heightened security and a strong army presence everywhere.

She recalls going out into the city, 10 hours after the attack on Tuesday evening (March 22), to buy something to eat.

She saw people taking photographs, holding up posters and lighting candles in a united front.

“It was overwhelming to see how people showed love, unity and hope,” said Naran.

“It was refreshing to see people coming out to make a statement and not staying indoors in fear of what had happened.”

Naran said the attack was an eye-opener and that people should appreciate their families, because anything can happen at any time.

She added that it was heartwarming to see people coming together.

Naran spent three days in Brussels, and returned to South Africa on March 25.
