Bake a home-made-looking cake

Bake a cake with a home-made look, said the next Benoni City Times Mother’s Day Cake Bake Competition judge, Claire Reynolds.

Reynolds agreed to become a judge for the competition because of her passion for food, both sweet and savoury.

“I am honoured to be invited to be on the panel,” she said.

Together with her husband, Patrick Reynolds, they recently opened Eat @ The Bistro in Western Extension.

Reynolds has had her fair share of baking since a little girl.

At the tender age of 15, she was given the opportunity to bake for her grandmother’s tea parties.

“One favourite was a deliciously moist chocolate Swiss roll with fresh cream,” she said.

“Additionally, as a mother, I spent many hours making birthday cakes for the kids, such as witches, pigs and Power Rangers to name a few.”

So if bakers are wondering how to grab Reynolds’ attention, here are a few tips.

“Decoration is important; I like things not too structured,” she said.

“It does really come down to taste.

“The best cake for me is the combination of light, moist and airy with depth of flavour.”

Reynolds looks forward to meeting the contestants and tasting their cakes at the Benoni City Times Mother’s Day Cake Bake Competition happening at the Cherrylane Gourmet Café on 14th Avenue on May 5.

“I am looking forward to being a judge and appreciating the huge efforts of the contestants,” she said.

“I think it will be rewarding and a lot of fun.”
