Two arrested after Morehill shoot-out

Two would-be robbers were arrested after a shoot-out with security personnel forced them to flee.

Three suspects attempted to rob a business in Golden Drive, Morehill, but were stopped in their tracks by a local security company.

No one was injured during the shoot-out.

The incident occurred at about 8.30am on Friday, April 1, with two of the wanted persons arrested in the afternoon.

According to Const Zunickha Essakjee, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, an abandoned car was found by police in Brentwood Park, shortly after the firefight.

Using CCTV footage from the business, the Ekurhuleni Central Tracing Team (Benoni SAPS cluster task team) determined the vehicle was the one used during the attempted robbery in Morehill.

“The vehicle was positively used in the attempted robbery,” said Essakjee.

“The owner of the vehicle was traced and arrested.”

Essakjee said the second suspect was arrested in Johannesburg, at the residence of the first arrested person.

“Both suspects were positively identified using the CCTV footage,” she added.

“They were detained on two charges of business robbery, which occurred in Benoni.”

The first robbery had occurred in Brentwood Park on March 10, where the same vehicle was reportedly used.

A man and a woman were arrested, while police were still searching for the third suspect, believed to be male, at the time of publication.

The two were detained at the Benoni Police Station and were expected to appear in court soon.

At the time of publication, it was unclear which security company had been involved in the shoot-out.
