Local beauty wants to make a difference

Benoni High School pupil Lerato Tau is smart, beautiful and driven.

Lerato has been chosen as one of 41 finalists for Miss Teen Commonwealth South Africa (CWSA) 2016.

The 15-year-old started modelling in 2014.

She is currently signed with Model Manifest Modelling Academy in Brakpan.

Lerato said her love for modelling came from her mother, Pumla Tau.

“My mother used to be a beauty queen back in her day,” she said.

She explained that she entered Miss Teen CWSA to make a positive impact on the lives of other young people.

“I also want to empower the underprivileged children with disabilities to enjoy their basic human rights without being discriminated against,” said Lerato.

“I’ve realised that it’s not about being beautiful but being a confident, well-spoken young woman that can make a difference.”

The Commonwealth pageants are a platform created for women of all ages to become charity and culture ambassadors within South Africa.

The Rynfield resident has already started her journey in philanthropy in the short space of time of being a pageant semi-finalist.

“Throughout my journey, I will be working with Little Eden Home for the Disabled in Elvira Rota Village, Bapsfontein,” she said.

“This will give me a platform to give back to the community.”

The finale of the pageant will take place at The Lyric Theatre in Gold Reef City in June.

“Winning the competition would mean a lot to me, as I will be able to have a platform to give back to the community, especially to children living with disability,” she said.

In five years’ time, Lerato wants to see herself as an information technology specialist and pursuing her childhood dream of being Miss South Africa in 2022.

Her role model is former Miss SA Melinda Bam.

“She inspires me to give it my all and never give up, as good things come to those who wait,” said Lerato.

Lerato added that as a young person you need to follow your dreams and work hard to make them come true.
