Minister commends education NGOs

Basic Education minister Angie Motshekga recently acknowledged the work done by non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

She and Umalusi chairman Prof John Volmink attended an Education NGO Leadership Summit, on March 11, at the Kopanong Hotel and Conference Centre.

This summit was convened for NGOs by the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT).

Delegates had the opportunity to share what their roles are in implementing the National Development Plan (NDP), as well as their operational circumstances and sustainability.

The ultimate vision of the NDP is to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality through growth by 2030.

The NDP emphasised that the quality of education in the country is in dire need of improvement and offers a long-term perspective on how to address the internal obstacles that constrain its delivery.

Addressing the attendees, Motshekga echoed President Jacob Zuma when she said: “Education is a societal issue and requires all sectors and communities to work together, to resolve the challenges of the sector.

“We have in the basic education sector what seems to be a mammoth task.”

She acknowledged the sterling support she has received from the NGO sector, saying: “Government benefits a lot from the excellent work that the NGOs do; when we need distinction in our work we look to the NGOs to provide the cutting edge.”
