Benoni police officer killed in Brakpan shooting

A Benoni police officer has died in hospital after being shot in the chest by alleged hijackers on March 18.

The incident occurred on the R554 and R23 roads intersection in Brakpan.

Hawks spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said the officer had just knocked off work and was on his way home when he noticed an SUV travelling recklessly at the intersection.

“He then managed to stop the SUV and when walking towards it, the alleged suspects shot at him,” said Mulaudzi.

“The suspects then jumped out of the SUV and got into another car.”

Mulaudzi said the officer was critically injured and he was airlifted to hospital.

Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Capt Joep Joubert has confirmed that the officer died yesterday (March 18) in hospital at around 9pm – about two hours after the shooting.

Mulaudzi added the SUV was hijacked in Brakpan earlier on the day.

No arrests had been made at the time of publication.

A case of hijacking and murder was opened at the Brakpan Police Station.
