Garbage piles up in Benoni

Scores of people were compelled to take their household waste to nearby dump sites last week, after Benoni’s streets had been lined with rubbish since March 9.

Northmead resident Mark Robey said he took three bags of rubbish to the dump site on Hospital Road, on March 16.

“I had only three bags and the dogs were getting hold of them, so I decided to take them to the dump site,” he said.

The City Times was informed on Tuesday, March 15 that refuse was not being collected in Benoni.

According to Ward 28’s Clr Mary Goby, the employees of a contractor responsible for waste collection in Benoni embarked on a strike on March 9.

However, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality spokesperson Themba Gadebe said it was not a strike nor illegal, but a “service interruption”.

Ward 23’s Clr André du Plessis said: “The workers are not happy with the quality of their safety boots”.

“Another contributing factor is the rolling out of the 240l wheelie bins; workers are scared they will lose their jobs.

“They will not lose their jobs, they will be placed into other projects and areas within Ekurhuleni.”

Gadebe said all refuse was due to be collected by the end of the weekend (March 19 and 20).

“We apologise to the residents for the inconvenience,” he added.
