Butchery owner shot dead in Western Extension

A shootout at a butchery on Russel Street, Western Extension has left one man dead and a woman seriously injured.

“Nothing was taken,” said Benoni Police Station spokesperson, Lieut Nomsa Sekele.
“So a case of murder and attempted murder has been opened at the Benoni Police Station.”
Sekele said three armed suspects entered the butchery around 5.15pm on Thursday (March 17), and shot at the two victims.
“The suspects shot the owner in his upper body and he died on scene,” said Sekele.
“A female customer was shot and was later rushed to hospital.”
It is not clear what the woman’s condition is.
The three suspects fled the scene in a Nissan bakkie.
Police also suspect their involvement in a robbery which took place at a pharmacy later the same evening on Tom Jones Street.
“A Nissan bakkie was also seen at the scene, but five suspects were involved in the robbery,” Sekele said.
Three of the five suspects were armed.
“An undisclosed amount of money was taken from the pharmacy,” said Sekele.
