Man dies in shooting spree, alongside his wife

Police are still investigating the motive for a shooting in which an elderly couple were victims this afternoon.

A 78-year-old man was shot dead at an Actonville business at around 1.30pm today (March 15).

Paramedics declared the victim dead when they arrived on scene.

The man’s 74-year-old wife was in a critical condition in hospital at 5.15pm.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said a witness told police two gunmen entered a shop on Mayet Drive and started firing.

“According to the witness, he just heard gunshots while he was busy washing a car,” said Sekele.

“He had to take cover because the suspects were still shooting while running away.”

Sekele said the couple were alone in the business.

Several shell casings are believed to have been found inside and outside the shop.

The gunmen fled on foot.

A case of murder and attempted murder has been opened.

No arrests had been made at the time of publication.

Sekele said the two shooters are men, believed to be in their early 20s.
