Thousands raised for young cancer patient in one night

A sum of R32 500 was raised for a six-year-old cancer patient, in one night.

One of the final shows of ’90s Mania doubled as a fund-raiser for Boksburg resident Jordan van Tonder, who was diagnosed with a rare form of thyroid cancer, in October.

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora teamed up with SA Home Loans to help Jordan and his mother, Eileen, with much needed funds.

The boy was diagnosed with medullary thyroid carcinoma, which is, according to his mother, is so rare there is no specialised treatment in South Africa.

Due to this, the mother and son, who previously lived in Rynfield, have to travel to Washington DC, in the US, for tests and possible medication.

“I’m so grateful for the help; we’ll have to organise a few more fund-raisers, but this is so great,” Eileen said.

The ticket sales as well as a miniature auction made up the amount raised at the show, which was held in the Barnyard Theatre, at Emperors Palace.
