Seven-year-old finally discharged

After a wait of almost 24 hours to be admitted to hospital and a two-day wait to be assessed by a doctor, seven-year-old C-Jay van Staden was finally discharged on the afternoon of February 25.

“It’s good to be back home. I missed my mother’s food and watching television,” said van Staden.

His mother, Anel van Staden, is also excited to have her son back in the comfort of his own home in Crystal Park.

“The doctor examined him on Thursday morning,” she said.

“His arm is broken, but they put a cast on it and said that he needs to visit the hospital in three weeks’ time for a check-up.”

On February 21 C-Jay was at a friend’s house in Petit, where he fell from a jungle gym and was rushed to the Far East Rand Hospital in Springs.

His mother said that he waited until 3pm on Monday to be admitted.

The hospital’s communication manager, Hendrik Buda, said the wait was due to bed availability.

“After review by the doctor, the child was admitted in Ward Two,” Buda said.

“He was admitted on February 22 at 3pm on the availability of an empty bed.”
