Water going to waste in Apex

An Apex resident, who has reportedly been complaining to the EMM for six months about a water leak on Toronto Street, said the leak is causing unnecessary water wastage.

Christine Malan, who has been living with her son and daughter in Apex for 46 years, said the water has been leaking onto the road and that she has contacted the municipality on a number of occasions, but the problem has not been fixed.

“I used to visit the Customer Care Centre at least twice a week to enquire, until they sent me to their water department, on the corner of Vlei and Pretoria roads,” she said.

According to Malan, the leakage is a result of private contractors who were digging outside a factory.

“There was no problem, so I do not know why they were digging, but they clearly broke something, because since that day, there has been water on the road that is coming from where they were digging,” she said.

According to Malan, the water department told her to find out who the private contractors are, but she was unable to do so.

She is concerned because the country is facing a drought and the water that is flowing onto the road could be put to better use.

“I am not paying for water because the houses on this street each get 3 000l of water for free, but I am still concerned about those who do not even get water and this is water being wasted,” she said.

The EMM was approached for comment but none had been received at the time of going to print.
