The Izimbizo is a programme used by government representatives to account to communities on the work they are doing while also consulting communities for inputs in terms of taking the city forward.
Members of the Mayoral Committee Clr Ndosi Shongwe and Clr Aubrey Nxumalo addressed the community with issues that were relevant to them.
The councillors said the following will be done within the EMM soon:
- The upgrading of libraries and police stations in Crystal Park and Daveyton.
- Building a clinic in Crystal Park and Barcelona.
- The Benoni Town Hall is currently being upgraded.
- R7-million will be set aside to remodel and upgrade the Benoni Plaza.
- Task teams will be allocated to deal with illegal mining and crime in Kingsway (within three to six months).
- More RDP houses will be built on open land in areas such as Chief Albert Luthuli Park, Farrarmere Gardens, parts of Wattville and Actonville (to start this year).
- Movable waste bins will be rolled out in Daveyton, central Benoni, Actonville and Wattville (within three to six months).
- The upgrading of sports and recreational facilities will take place (within this year and next year).
- The installation of solar geysers, street lights and electricity in informal settlements (within this year and next year).
- Speed humps will be put near places such as parks, churches or places of worship, schools and busy intersections.
- New tariff rates for flats will be implemented.
- The refurbishing of flats and the repairing of lifts.
- The repairing of water and sewage pipes. Benoni is considered a crisis area when it comes to these two issues.
- Cleaning up central Benoni and decreasing the amount of drug and illegal activities currently taking place.
As the term for the present council comes to an end, residents are urged to go and register in the local elections on March 5 and 6.
