Elite runner is making a name for himself

At the tender age of 23, Benoni runner Reynard “Rey” Winter-Mentz already knows the endurance game all too well.

Winter-Mentz was one of the youngest competitors to tackle the daunting 87km up-run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg at last year’s Comrades Marathon.

“The race only mentally started for me at 66km and was a constant mental game right up until entering the Oval Stadium in Maritzburg before crossing the finishing line.”

Impressively, the local runner also achieved a Top 49 position at last year’s Longtom Ultra 55km race for his first ultra marathon, which he used as a training race ahead of Comrades.

The Nedbank Running Club Johannesburg representative is extremely strong mentally, particularly when taking on the hills.

He is focused on running fast marathons and has eyes on hopefully qualifying for the 2020 Olympics, before returning back to Comrades where he is determined that he will break the sub-six hour mark among the elite men, and earn a Top 10 position.

His high-speed training has allowed him to dominate local half-marathons and he is well underway with preparations for this year’s Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, in September, where he is set to run close to the two hours and 30 minute mark in the 42.2km marathon.
