Rudi’s fund nears halfway line

Rudi Burger will soon be able to replace his ageing prosthetic leg, as his fund is growing steadily.

Members of the public can still donate to the 39-year-old Crystal Park resident, who walks with a crutch, because of the pain caused by his third prosthetic leg.

Johan Loubser, owner of Terrace Pharmacy, opened an account at the Rynfield store in December, where anyone can donate funds towards Burger’s new leg, which will cost R56 270.

The fund has risen to R20 000.

Burger was born with a crooked ankle on his left foot and underwent a series of operations during his childhood and into adulthood.

Eventually, with the possible failure of an upcoming operation looming over him, Burger decided to have his left leg amputated.

Since then he has been helped by Kobus van der Merwe, the owner of the Spar store at which he works at the Terrace Shopping Centre, as well as by the state and his family.

Burger supports his wife, Liezel, and their six-year-old daughter, Elzaan, for which he needs his job, but he can no longer perform his duties in the same way he was previously able to.

Clinton Maritz, owner of Local Connection Real Estate, in Pretoria Road, put the first R1 000 into the fund, in December, and urged other local businesses to do the same.

Loubser followed suit by pledging another R1 000.

Kobus van der Merwe said Rynfield Superspar would pay half of the money needed for Rudi’s leg.
