Three die in Wattville plane crash

Three people died when a plane crashed in Wattville this morning.

According to Ekurhuleni Emergency Services (EES) spokesman William Ntladi the light aircraft had taken off from Brakpan Airfield at 11.15am and was en route to Mpumulanga when it crashed in a park on the corner of Sesedi and Rasebetsi streets.

EES received the call at 11.18am.

Ntladi said that as the plane landed it caught fire and firefighters had to extinguish the flames.

He confirmed that paramedics tried to resuscitate one of the victims but it was too late and the person died.

According to eyewitness William Kubeka, a resident in Wattville, the plane hit a light pole when it came down in Sesedi Street and then hit a shack opposite the park and eventually crashed near a tree in the park.

He said that it then rolled for about 20m until it came to a stop on a netball court.

Police and emergency officials are on the scene and are waiting on officials from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to arrive and assess the scene.

City Times journalists are on the scene of the crash and will provide updates as they come in.
