Farewell to a pillar of strength

David Jonathen Price died on January 13, after two years of intense suffering due to a terminal illness.

David was the son of Marie and Tom Price, and was born on March 28, 1957.

He is survived by his wife Linda, sons Dean and Lloyd, daughter-in-law Mico, grand-daughter Lilly, brothers Johnny and Shorty Price and sister Shereen Jackson.

Growing up in Northmead with his siblings, he attended Tom Newby School and Benoni High School and then acquired his Cost Accounting qualification from the University of the Witwatersrand.

While growing up he was a keen sportsman, who played cricket and baseball and boxed, with swimming and soccer being his main interests.

During his career he worked at various companies, such as Consol Glass, Mintex Don, Howden Pumps, Babcock Equipment and Spare Power.

In 1979 he married Linda Bowery and the couple moved to Atlasville, where they raised their two sons, Dean and Lloyd, for whom David’s love and pride were inexhaustible.

His strong Catholic faith was prominent in their upbringing and his family was the most important part of his life.

“He was the most dedicated, involved, attentive, supportive and loving husband and father,” said Linda.

“Nothing came before his family and he instilled this in their daily lives.”

David was always active and kept up his swimming and golf until he fell ill.

One of his favourite pastimes was horse racing, which he regularly enjoyed watching and betting on with his devoted, life-long friend, Eddie Berrington.

David was extensively known, respected and loved within the Benoni community.

“He did everything in Benoni, he lived his whole life here,” Linda said.

She remembers her husband as having a commanding personality that encompassed courage, enormous love, generosity, compassion, kindness, selflessness and total dedication to his family.

“He was always willing to give advice and guidance; his desire to help others was endless,” she said.

The family has been blessed with abundant support and condolences from family, friends and acquaintances, for which they are sincerely grateful.

David’s funeral service was held in the St Patrick’s Catholic Church, in Woburn Avenue, on January 15.
