The love for children runs deep

Linnette and Louis Lambrecht have had the pleasure of welcoming 95 children into their home through the foster care system, since 1973.

After 34 years of working with Benoni Child Welfare, as a permanent member of the administration staff, Linnette left the organisation at the end of September, last year.

Looking forward to what the future holds, she aims to continue with the foster care system and contributing to different organisations in Benoni.

Having had seven children of their own, they have had to adjust their lifestyle to accommodate the children who are brought into their home.

“We have received children in many different states; some were abused, some had bruises, others were burnt – you never know what to expect,” said Linnette.

“We accept whatever the phone call brings.”

Working closely with social workers, the Lambrechts have provided a place of safety for many children, while waiting for the courts to decide what is best for the child.

Linnette describes the role of being a foster mother as both challenging and rewarding.

“The most difficult thing is getting the children to trust you and training them to let go when it’s time for them to go,” she said.

Throughout many years of fostering, the Northmead resident has has the support of her husband and children.

She has always treated the children the same way she has treated her own offspring.

“It’s important to teach the children that family stands together,” she said.

The Lambrechts have had the opportunity to foster children for up to four years before handing them over to the courts.

Both Linnette and Louis acknowledged that they have learnt valuable lessons from the children.

”The children need love and care; it’s amazing what love does to you,” said Linnette.

Her strong faith has seen her through all the years of fostering and she is a firm believer that she will continue to foster children throughout the rest of her life.

“It is a gift from God,” said the 70-year-old mother.
