Keep your garden happy

The Benoni Horticultural Society hosted a talk focused on gardening in difficult weather conditions, on January 16.

Johan du Preez, of Starke Ayres, advised members that even though some areas have received rain, there are some important procedures that people should follow.

He explained that some leaves may appear yellow on the edges, because of an iron shortage.

To prevent this, they should pour iron chelate to cure the leaves.

If snails are a problem in your garden, due to the rain, then gardeners should apply snail-preventing products to help to remove them from the garden.

He also spoke of the importance of making sure your plants are happy.

“When you apply poison to kill termites, make sure you apply it later on in the day – so it does not harm bees,” said du Preez.

This will ensure that by the next day, the poison will have disappeared.

“If you have a problem with weeds, then apply a lawn weeder to help remove them from your garden,” he said.

Benoni Horticultural Society members meet once a month.
