Police warn business owners against robbers

Police have issued a warning to pub and restaurant owners around Benoni to tighten their security measures.

This comes after two separate business robbery cases were reported at the Benoni Police Station, days apart.

Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said two pubs were robbed in Northmead and Rynfield respectively.

On January 19, Capello’s Restaurant, corner of O’Reilly Merry and Malherbe streets in Rynfield was robbed.

“Three suspects wearing balaclavas entered the restaurant and instructed the complainant, at gun point to open the office,” said Sekele.

“The suspects took cellphones, an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene in their getaway car.”

In another incident, on January 21, Mary Anne’s Pub and Diner, at Mona Lisa Shopping Centre, in Northmead was robbed at around 11pm.

Sekele said four suspects with firearms entered the pub, demanded cellphones, money and handbags from the employees and customers.

“Police suspect that on both incidents it might be the same suspects as the same modus operandi was applied,” said Sekele.

“We are pleading to pub and restaurant owners to tighten their security measures and to be alert at all times.”

No suspects have been arrested and investigations were ongoing at the time of publication.

Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrators can contact 10111 or the Benoni detectives on 011 747 0027.
