Western Extension to fall under Ward 73

The issue surrounding possible changes to Ward 28 has been resolved.

Clr Mary Goby, of Ward 28, voiced her concerns at the possibility that the ward would be divided into three wards.

Now the only change that will be made is that Western Extension will fall under Ward 73; it was previously divided between wards 28 and 73.

Ward 28 will now consists of Lakefield, Westdene, The Stewards, Lakefield Extension 21, Alphen Park and Farrarmere.

Western Extension, Benoni CBD, New Modder, Rynsoord, Mackenzie Park and Kingsway will fall under Ward 73.

Goby said even though she will be losing the area, she understands that it had to be done to even out the numbers.

“I am used to working with people in Western Extension,” said Goby.

Daniel Sebake, of the demarcation board, said ward growth requires that current wards make space for additional wards.

“A ward has to be changed if the number of voters is way above 15 per cent of the average determined for the ward,” he said.

“The voting district is then split, to allocate some of the people to other wards, to ensure that each ward has an even spread of voters.”

Goby said she is still undergoing the process for allocation.

“I am not sure which of the two wards I may be allocated, but there are fantastic residents in both wards,” she said.

The municipal election date has not been announced, but voter registration will take place on March 5 and 6.
