Dog in snare finds home

The crossbred wire-haired terrier, Scruffy, which was found caught in a snare on December 1, in the Benoni Agricultural Holdings, has found a home.

The canine’s condition has improved and become stable.

Dr Megan Carter, of the Oakfields Veterinary Hospital, said: “The individual who has been paying for Scruffy’s veterinary account will be taking him home on December 8.

“It’s uncertain if it will be permanent, or just foster care until his original owner is found.”

The young male dog was found with an injured back left paw, caught in the snare attached to an Elm Road property’s fence line, and was taken to the Oakfields Veterinary Hospital.

The animal’s wound showed signs of necrosis and Carter attempted to locate the owner for a week.

She was concerned that Scruffy’s leg would have to be amputated and needed the owner’s permission for the operation.

However, with the use of medication and bandages, it is possible that Scruffy won’t need an amputation.

Shelley Owens, of the SPCA, said the snares are put up on fences by people hoping to trap small wildlife, to eat.

“There are snares in that area all the time,” she added.

“It’s always a problem.”
