Northvilla rape victim dies

The woman who was raped by three of four men who broke into her Northvilla home, in 2014, has died.

Her death comes about a month after a man was arrested in connection with the crime.

The victim approached the City Times nine months after she was brutally raped in her home, on April 6, last year.

Four men gained entry into the house, which is in a security complex, by lifting the electric fence with a plastic pole.

They tied up her husband and beat him over the head with a gun, before partly undressing the woman and raping her for over an hour.

Her husband survived the attack.

Benoni police took nine months to take a statement from the victim, but did so shortly after the City Times queried why they had not done so earlier.

Benoni SAPS communications officer Const Zunickha Essakjee said the woman’s husband found her body inside their home, on November 28, at around 9.30pm.

It is believed she overdosed on prescription medication, but a post mortem report has not yet confirmed this.

An inquest docket has been opened.

The man who was arrested was expected to make his second appearance in the Benoni Magistrates Court on December 7.

He is charged with rape and house robbery.
