Changing perceptions with food

When was the last time you grew a garden in your backyard and planted various vegetables and fruit?

If you have been contemplating the idea, then Real Food 4 Real People will assist you in gaining momentum for growing your food.

The project is run by Elsabe Booyens, who believes that if we do not return to our “roots” and grow our own food, we may run out of the food we need.

The project aims to help communities grow their own food and is sponsored by Lakeside Mall.

Real Food 4 Real People was officially launched at Lakeside Mall on Saturday, December 5.

The event saw members of the public being given a demonstration on how to make spicy butternut soup and a rocket, watermelon and mango salad.

A decorating workshop was also hosted, and children were kept busy with a colouring area

Justine Joseph, a young chef from Johannesburg, prepared all the meals for the day.

From early next year, Real Food 4 Real People will assist Actonville Primary School to plant and grow their own vegetables and fruit.

Booyens said the school should expect to be picking from their own garden by March.

Various cooking and gardening classes will be held at Lakeside Mall in the new year.

And, if you enjoy visiting a market, a fresh food market will be held at the mall from January, on a monthly basis.

Booyens would like to encourage farmers of vegetables and fruit, cheese makers, jam makers and other fresh food producers to come forward and join the market.

If you would like to join the market, contact her at realfood4realpeoplesa@gmail.com.
