Dog caught in snare

The injured crossbred wire-haired terrier, Scruffy, which was found on December 1, in the area of Benoni Agricultural Holdings (BAH) still needs to be reunited with its owner.

Dr Megan Carter, from the Oaksfield Veterinary Hospital, said the young male dog is doing well.

“We are taking it one day at a time, and hopefully we won’t have to amputate the leg,” said Carter.

The canine was found caught in a snare on an Elm Road property’s fence line.

The dog’s back, left paw was injured, showing signs of necrosis as a result of the snare.

Shelley Owens, of the SPCA, said that snares are put up on fences by people hoping to trap small wildlife, to eat.

“There are snares in that area all the time,” said Owens.

“It’s always a problem.”

The veterinary hospital is hoping that Scruffy’s wound will heal with the use of bandages and medication.

However, the dog will still need its owner to come forward or it will go up for adoption.
