EMPD to increase visibility during festive season

As the festive season begins the EMPD has launched "Operation Bumper to Bumper: Escalated".

The campaign was launched by Mondli Gungubele, Ekurhuleni mayor, and EMPD chief Bafana Mahlabe on December 2.

EMPD officers intend to intensify police visibility, road safety, crime prevention, traffic and by-law enforcement.

Mahlabe said police visibility will be increased because many people fall victim to crime during the festive season.

“To ensure that police presence is felt, we will be deploying our Peace Corps who will patrol around shopping malls,” said Mahlabe.

“There will also be more Metro Police officers guarding townships, suburbs and various central business districts.”

At the launch of the campaign, Gungubele took to the streets with a message of safety as he interacted with motorists at a blitz on the M2, in Germiston.

The areas the Bumper to Bumper campaign will focus on include:

While the EMPD focuses on crime and traffic duties, the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services (EMS) will be on high alert.

EMS will set up mini-roadside stations on all high accident routes and major highways including; N3, N17, N12 and the Albertina Sisulu Corridor.
