Roofs to be fixed – Ekurhuleni

According to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), arrangements to permanently fix roofs damaged by hail are underway.

Daveyton and Etwatwa were among the affected areas within the EMM.

Themba Gadebe, EMM spokesperson, said approximately 1 049 houses with damaged roofs have been covered with temporary sheets.

The reconstruction phase follows the hailstorm that struck Ekurhuleni two weeks ago.

“Over 2 000 cases of broken windows have been reported and repairs to these will follow once all roofs have been repaired,” said Gadebe.

As reconstruction gets underway, the Ekurhuleni Health Department and the Gauteng Department of Social Development are visiting affected households.

The departments are providing counselling services, food, blankets and other forms of social assistance.

“Since last week, 296 households have been visited,” said Gadebe.

“Some 43 of those have been referred to Food Bank SA for assistance with food parcels, and 25 to the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa).”

The EMM continues to appeal for individuals and organisations to make donations of non-perishable food and blankets.

These donations can be dropped of at the temporary relief stall set up at Primrose Fire Station, at 1 Pretoria Road, Germiston.

“Construction companies are requested to lend a hand by choosing to rebuild the roof of a house during the reconstruction,” said Gadebe.

Any company or organisation willing to assist can contact Disaster and Emergency Management Services on 011 999 9565.

Response teams are available at the Etwatwa Fire Station to attend to reports of damage.
