Dog found caught in Elm Road snare

The Oakfields Veterinary Hospital is looking for the owner of a dog that was found caught in a snare yesterday (December 1).

The dog was found trapped in a snare attached to the fence line of an Elm Road property, in Benoni Agricultural Holdings, with its back left leg caught in the snare.

Stefan Wikel, a resident of the Elm Road property and one of the first people to find the dog, said it is a young female wire terrier cross-breed, which is mostly white in colour with some brown patches.

“When the dog was first found, her wound was crawling with maggots, meaning she had been stuck in the snare for a few days,” Wikel said.

He added that another nearby resident had removed approximately 25 snares off of their fence line, as a result of people trying to hunt for small animals.

Dr Megan Carter of the Oakfields Veterinary Hospital stated that Scruffy, a temporary name based on the dog’s appearance, is approximately one year old.

“When the dog first came into the veterinary hospital it was in poor condition and needed to be put on a drip for supportive treatment,” Carter said.

Scruffy’s back left leg will have to be amputated as a result of the injury, even though only her paw was caught in the snare.

The hospital needs to contact the owner of the dog urgently, in order to get permission to amputate the dog’s leg, as she had no collar or microchip to verify ownership.

Anyone with information regarding the dog’s owner can contact Oakfields Veterinary Hospital on 011 425 0224.
