Free Wi-Fi hotspots launched

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) recently launched a free Wi-Fi hotspot service.

A total of 925 hotspots and 225 municipal buildings now have Wi-Fi access for public use.

The official announcement was made by Clr Mondli Gungubele, Ekurhuleni mayor, on November 19.

Themba Gadebe, EMM spokesperson, said the need for access has been made evident by the 62 901 people who have used the hotspots to date.

“A total of 2 900 people are reported to be reaching the maximum cap of 250 megabites per day – per person,” said Gadebe.

Gungubele said: “In pursuit of our vision to become the smart, creative and developmental city – and in understanding the information technology era in which we live – we have made it our business to ensure that our people do not get left behind.”

A Wi-Fi cap of 250 megabites has been put in place as a monitoring tool and, once the demand grows, the city is prepared to increase the cap.

The introduction of free Wi-Fi will be an enhancement to other digital innovations, such as the e-siyakhokha tool used by residents to pay for services.

The city is also expected to launch a customer relations application in the near future.
