Squatters occupy land in Morehill

Gavin Scott is hoping around 20 people will be provided with alternative accommodation, as they are residing on an open piece of land in Morehill.

The squatters live on the corner of Norman and Back streets.

After previously staying in Van Ryn, near Golden Drive, the squatters relocated to the open piece of land and their presence has raised concern among residents who live in Morehill.

Scott said the squatters are living on private property.

He explained that the EMPD, along with the council, evicted the squatters, cut down trees and cleaned litter where the people resided.

Scott was told that the squatters would be relocated to a formalised informal settlement, chosen by the Department of Social Development.

“My heart breaks to see them living in such conditions,” he said.

With a tap across the street, they are able to access water.

“We have no place to stay, we need a proper place to stay,”said Nicholas Makathini, one of the squatters.

“We have been living like this for 20 years.”

Living in tents and shacks with no electricity is the reality that these people face on a daily basis.

With recycling as their only source of income, Scott hopes the Department of Social Development will soon find a decent place for them to stay.
