A leak too many

With the high demand for water and constant calls to conserve the precious resource, every water leak is now being scrutinised.

Brett Harding, a Westdene resident, has had a water leak for seven months.

He said he has three reference numbers and a string of SMSes to a municipal contact, yet no repairs had been done by the end of last week.

He claims the leak is on the municipal side of a water meter, at the corner of Divot and Putt streets, Westdene.

“The municipality should prioritise repairing the leaks according to the level of severity,” said Harding

“They must communicate with the public and let us know what they are doing to fix the problem.”

On November 13, another water leak was reported to the City Times; this time a leaking pipe on the corner of Trumpet and Vlei roads, across from Shining Angels Pre-school.

According to the pre-school owner, Angelique Peters, water has been streaming out of the pipe for four years; a municipal representative disputed Peters’ claims.

“As soon as people heard about this, they were furious, because it’s a lot of litres per minute being wasted,” said Ricky Coelho, chairman of nearby Country View.

Mackenzie Park resident Peter Tsherane has also reported a water leak that has been leaking for a few weeks on the corner of Apex Road and Detroit Street.

The water is flowing out of the water meter and into the street.

“This is bad; clean water is being wasted unnecessarily,” said Tsherane.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) is encouraging the public to continue reporting water leaks in and around Ekurhuleni.

EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the municipality is “relying on the community to report water leaks”.

He said all complaints can be made to the Ekurhuleni call centre, with a turnaround time of 48 hours for leaks to be repaired.

“We will work quicker to get the leaks fixed in less than 48 hours, where possible,” added Gadebe.

The call centre can be contacted on 0860 543 000.
