Police motivated despite shoot-out

Members of the Benoni SAPS cluster are still positive towards policing, despite two of their colleagues being injured in a shoot-out with a group of criminals, on Friday.

Two constables from the Crystal Park Police Station were wounded in the incident on High Road, at around 3.30am.

One was shot in the leg and another in the shoulder.

“Members have been asked to remain constantly alert,” said Brig Poobalan Subbiah, acting Benoni SAPS cluster commander.

“They are fully geared and equipped to do policing.

“Members are heavily armed and we will definitely not sit back and be shot at.

“We will face criminals with the power we have in the ambit of the law.”

Subbiah said members are positive and are eager to fulfil their policing duties.

Benoni Community Policing Forum (CPF) executive chairperson Reza Patel said of the shooting that police are not dealing with the ”average joe criminal.”

“What we have are highly skilled and organised groups of criminals who are resourced with high-end weaponry and are psychologically prepared with specific intent to neutralise any challenge by law authorities or civil bodies such as security companies,” he added.

According to Patel, the CPF is “outraged” at the incident and will continue supporting the police.

Subbiah visited both victims in hospital and said they are in a stable condition.

Patel visited one of the officers in hospital at the weekend.
