Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said the bodies were trapped underground.
According to Brig Poobalan Subbiah, acting Benoni cluster commander, one of the men had two bullet wounds, one in the chest and the other in his right leg.
“It appears that the men were shot underground,” said Subbiah.
Rescue operations were underway to retrieve bodies.
Subbiah said a murder docket would be opened.
