It’s all water under the bridge

Three cars were partly submerged on Lakefield Avenue this afternoon.

The heavens opened over Benoni at around 3pm, causing slight flooding in parts of the town.

A doctor and Lakefield resident, who did not want to be named, was driving down Lanyon Road in a Toyota Land Cruiser, towards Lakefield Avenue, when he decided to brave the water underneath the railway bridge.

“I tried to drive through, when all of a sudden, on the left side of the railway line, it was a waterfall,” he said.

“The car started filling up and cut out and I couldn’t drive.”

The water held him hostage in his vehicle for 10 to 15 minutes.

He later exited the vehicle through the driver’s window.

The motorist said the car was floating during the ordeal.

The water level reached about 1m to 1.5m.

Sean Stopford, of Bad Boyz Security, said he closed down a portion of the road near the bridge as three cars were partly submerged.

A black VW Polo, Toyota Corolla and the Toyota Land Cruiser were submerged for about 30 minutes.
