Don’t pitch tents on the road

Thinking of putting up a tent in a roadway?

Think twice before you do it.

On November 8, two weddings were disrupted when the EMPD removed tents that were blocking the road at Barwa and Heald streets, in Daveyton.

This was after the organisers refused to remove the obstructions themselves.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago said putting up tents on a road, be it for weddings or funerals, is banned by the municipality.

“Information in this regard has been disseminated extensively via the media and through community structures, with a view to ensure compliance,” he added.

According to Kgasago, some residents choose to transgress the law, causing inconvenience to other road-users and damaging the tarmac on the roads.

“This is not acceptable and community members are implored to observe the law to this regard,” he said.

The offenders were given a strict warming and made aware of the R1 000 fine that may be imposed.

The tents were not confiscated.
