Extradition of Canadian suspect underway in Benoni

A Canadian fugitive wanted in his home country for murder and possession of firearms charges, was arrested yesterday (November 11) by Interpol’s Extradition Task Team in Benoni.

Proceedings for his extradition will commence in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court today, November 12.

“The 28-year-old suspect, who skipped bail in Canada in 2013 and fled the country that August, had been living with his relatives in South Africa,” said Brig Vishnu Naidoo, SAPS communication officer.

“Upon receiving an extradition request from Canada in March, the South African authorities, through Interpol, began tracing the man.”

The suspect could not be named pending his court appearance.

At the time of publishing, Naidoo could not confirm where in Benoni the man had been arrested.
