Local children show off singing talent

The Ekurhuleni Children's Choir (ECC) hasn't amassed much fame in South Africa yet, but they're already planning their fourth trip abroad.

The singers performed on the Boat Deck of the Lakeside Mall recently, at an event which included a motivational talk by Pam van Niekerk.

The crowd was captivated by the perfectly synchronised voices, with several solos from pure voices.

The choir is planning a trip overseas in 18 months, but hasn’t yet finalised plans.

“It depends on several factors; we haven’t picked a place yet and we still have to see what our budget will be,” said Neels Derckson, choir organiser.

“We see it as a good goal for the kids to work towards and we have a policy: either everyone goes, or no one goes.”

Derckson said they have been to the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Italy and Slovakia during three tours so far, and have won every competition in which they took part.

Derckson’s wife, Christine, has been the ECC’s conductor since its inception, in 2005.

Neels said the group is open for auditions and anyone interested can contact him on 082 717 8341.

The choir is an NPO and is open to any children between the ages of nine and 16.

The ECC performs across the East Rand, but its centre of practice is EnDeo Familiekerk, in Northmead.
