Support these climbers

Five men will, on Saturday, attempt to summit the highest peak in Southern Africa.

In a project initiated by Northmead resident Burns Maclear (68), he and four other climbers hope to raise awareness and spur people on to donate 20 000 Christmas gifts for less fortunate people.

Maclear will be joined by Dave Inggs, John Roux (Northfield Methodist Church executive pastor), John Shead (Northfield Methodist Church congregant) and Tony Habgood (pastor at the Northfield Methodist Church).

Maclear and Inggs were part of the Nine Peaks for Northfield fund-raiser earlier this year.

The men will climb Thabana Ntlenyana, in Lesotho, on November 7.

Maclear said his feet were itching to climb another mountain and he decided, once again, to dedicate his summit to a worthy cause.

“My aim is for 20 000 people to get something for Christmas; I don’t care where they come from,” he said.

People are urged to donate non-perishable food, clothing and toys to make up the gift hampers.

Churches and organisations who would like to receive presents for their missions may lodge a request with the Northfield Methodist Church.

The donations will be handed out to several organisations across Ekurhuleni, including the Salvation Army and Project Feed the Children, in Benoni.

People may drop off their gifts at the Benoni City Times office (Northmead Square), as well as at the Northfield Methodist Church.

Donations may be made until December 14.
