Two arrested following man’s murder

More than 16 months after a man died after being set alight by two robbers, police have arrested the second suspect believed to be responsible for the crime.

Capt Alie van den Berg, leader of the Benoni SAPS cluster priority task team, said a business robbery occurred in Kingsway on June 12, last year.

The spaza shop owner and his 16-year-old male assistant were asleep in the shop when two men broke into the establishment.

Van den Berg said the gunmen demanded money, but the owner resisted.

The robbers then poured cooking oil over the man and set him alight.

The victim died in hospital soon after the incident, while the assistant was not harmed.

Van den Berg said police arrested the first suspect about a month ago.

In the early hours of October 23, the task team followed up on information that the second suspect was seen driving in a white Ford Focus.

Police stopped on the side of the road in Etwatwa, having thought they had lost the trail, when he drove past police in the car matching the description they had been given.

He was arrested.

The two men are facing charges of business robbery and murder.

The latest suspect, who is 36 years old, is expect to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court on Monday.
