Man shot three times in canoe

A man was expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court today, on a charge of attempted murder and abduction, after he was allegedly involved in an incident in which a man was placed in a canoe and shot three times.

Capt Alie van den Berg, of the Benoni SAPS cluster task team, said the 25-year-old suspect, along with two accomplices, went to a house in Daveyton, where they tied up a man (31) and abducted him, on October 14.

Van den Berg said the men took the victim to the Leeupan, on the corner of Heidelberg Road and Dube Street, in Wattville, where they placed him in a canoe and shot him three times.

Community members heard the shots and notified authorities.

The man was hospitalised at the Far East Rand Hospital and survived the incident.

The Benoni SAPS cluster task team arrested the suspect in the Benoni CBD on October 21.

The motive for the crime is not known.

Police are still searching for two men who they believe are involved in the crime.

The shooting victim has been discharged from hospital.
