Plea for considerate celebrations

With Guy Fawkes and Diwali coming up, the Benoni SPCA is urging the public to avoid the use of fireworks.

“The Explosives Act covers the sale of fireworks, as well as issues relating to the discharge of fireworks in public places,” stated a press release by the society.

“In some municipalities, permits are required; in other areas there is dispensation for Diwali between specified times.”

The SPCA called for pet owners to ensure their animals’ safety and comfort during these celebrations, as it is likely that fireworks will be discharged.

The society said animals’ hearing is more acute than that of humans, causing a heightened sense and fear of fireworks.

“Make sure your pets don’t hurt themselves if they bolt, even indoors, or react when fireworks are discharged in the area,” the SPCA said.

The society extended good wishes to everyone celebrating Diwali.
